Most of us don't look like the models in the magazines or on runways. But that doesn't mean there is something wrong with the way we look. Building up your self image requires looking at yourself with a loving eye, not a critical one.
Step 1
Embrace everything about yourself---perfections and flaws. People who are 100 percent happy with themselves are rare. The qualities we often admire about others are often important to them, because they want something else. People who can't sing want to, and people who can sing want to dance. Find happiness in your own qualities, instead of comparing yourself to someone else.
Step 2
Be realistic about expectations. There is nothing wrong with wanting to improve something, but don't think negatively about yourself if things aren't the way you want them to be right now.
Step 3
Learn to look at yourself---literally---with a loving eye. Look in the mirror every day and tell yourself that you appreciate you. It may feel awkward, but it is an effective way to start thinking differently about your self image.
Step 4
Think about how you want others to perceive you. This goes beyond physical appearance to the characteristics you want others to use to describe you and what type of person you want to be. For example, if you want to be seen as a leader, find or create opportunities at home or work where you can effectively manage or lead a project or task.
Step 5
Treat yourself---whether it's a haircut or a spa service, take some time to pamper yourself.
