Psyllium, or ispaghula, comes from the husk of the seed of a plant and appears to offer many health benefits. Psyllium is one of the best sources of soluble fiber, which lowers total blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. Eating 3 grams of soluble fiber a day, as suggested by the American Dietetic Association, is sufficient to promote heart health. People interested in these benefits can add psyllium husk directly to their foods or look for food products containing this ingredient.
