Oily hair is a product of your subaceous glands working overtime, producing sebum that coats each hair. This overproduction of sebum makes hair look limp and lifeless, while adding to frustration when hairstyles fail to maintain their shape. According to the "Doctors Book of Home Remedies," your hormones control the amount of sebum produced by your body, making it impossible to reduce oil production. The course of action for dealing with oily hair is through hygeine practice.

Step 1

Cleanse hair more often to eliminate oils. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, daily washings are ideal. Apply a small amount of shampoo to the hair, and work into a lather. Leave lather on your hair for up to 5 minutes before rinsing. You may repeat shampooing after you rinse for extremely oily tresses.

Step 2

Apply a dandruff shampoo once weekly to help dry oily scalp and hair. Dandruff shampoos containing tar cut down oiliness, according to the "Doctors Book of Home Remedies." These shampoos also condition your hair without adding extra oils.

Step 3

Shampoo with a clarifying shampoo every other cleansing to remove built-up hair styling products and oil. Clarifying shampoos contain high amounts of sodium lauryl sulfate, a detergent common in over-the-counter cleansers, says the "Doctors Book of Home Remedies."

Step 4

Mix 1/2 cup vinegar with 1 cup of water and use as a rinse for your hair. According to CareFair.com, this gives you additional cleansing without harsh chemicals. Use twice weekly after shampooing to ensure your hair is fully cleansed. You can also add essential oils to make the scent of this rinse more pleasing.

Step 5

Avoid brushing your hair too often. Brushing distributes oils through the hair and stimulates oil production from the follicles. Brush your hair once daily to eliminate tangles and for styling purposes.
