Waistlines are more than just something to cinch your belt around. Because your waistline is determined by genetics and lifestyle, it is an important indicator of health. According to the McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois, “Waist circumference is one of the most practical tools to assess abdominal fat for chronic disease risk” for illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. The size and shape of your waistline is also a cultural measure of attractiveness and is the starting point for determining what styles suit your body.

Hourglass

Celebrated for its feminine allure, the hourglass waistline is defined by a curvy figure with voluptuous hips and bosom and a small waist. The hourglass represents both cultural and, according to BBC News, biological ideals of female beauty. The BBC reports that the classic small waist and large bust of the hourglass indicates higher hormone levels that suggest increased fertility.

Pear Shape

Small waists and flat stomachs are characteristic of pear-shaped women, who put on weight mostly around their hips and thighs, according to Fat Free Kitchen. Studies show this narrow waistline is a key indicator of good health. "Science Daily" reports that “having a ‘pear shape’ … actively protects against diabetes and heart disease” because the fat stored around the thighs traps potentially harmful fatty acids.

Apple Shape

If you gain and store weight mostly around your middle, you have an apple waistline. Apple waists are more common in men than in women, though women often put on more weight around their stomachs as they age because of hormonal changes, according to the BMI Calculator website. It also notes that abdominal fat is linked to the stress hormone cortisol, which encourages fat to store around the stomach, which in turn raises your risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses. If you have an apple waistline, good nutrition, exercise and stress management are important for maintaining your health.

High and Low Waist

Hourglass, pear or apple waistlines are indicators of your body's horizontal proportioning. High or low waistline is an indicator of the vertical proportioning—that is, the ratio between the length of your legs and your torso, according to Style Makeover HQ. High or low waistlines are not linked with any particular health issues, though Fat Free Kitchen notes apple shapes also might have high waistlines. However, as noted on Style Makeover HQ, “vertical shape is important for identifying your best garment lengths” for a flattering fit.
