Your bikini line is a sensitive area and improper shaving and failure to prepare the area for hair removal can lead to painful red bumps known as razor burn. Insufficient lubrication and too much pressure applied with the shaver can chafe the skin. Often times, a small area affected by razor burn causes a minor amount of itching and discomfort. Severe razor burn over your entire bikini area can be quite painful, requiring the use of a topical treatment to calm the itchy, burning sensation.
Step 1
Apply a dab of 1-percent hydrocortisone to the razor burn. Apply the hydrocortisone according to label instructions. Relief often occurs by applying the hydrocortisone twice a day, the first day severe razor burn occurs. Apply a thin layer of hydrocortisone to the area of skin that contains the severe razor burn and rub it in gently using your fingertips. Wear loose clothing over the affected area as the severe razor burn heals.
Step 2
Treat severe razor burn with a topical acne treatment that contains a maximum of 5-percent benzoyl peroxide. Apply the benzoyl peroxide sparingly to your skin after each shave, rubbing it gently into your skin using your fingertips. These treatments can help heal razor burn and prevent it from returning each time you shave your bikini line. Remember to wear a loose clothing after application. Clothing that clings can make the severe razor burn worse.
Step 3
Smooth a thin layer of aloe vera gel over your bikini line to relieve severe razor burn. Rub the aloe vera gel gently into your skin with the tips of your fingers. Apply the aloe vera gel several times a day. Aloe vera gel has medicinal properties that can help soothe and heal wounds and inflamed skin. Wear loose clothing over it to avoid further irritation of the severe razor burn.
Tips and Warnings
- The Mayo Clinic recommends softening your hair prior to shaving, by pressing a warm washcloth against your skin. Shaving your bikini line in the bath or shower will also help soften the hair. Apply shaving cream to your bikini line and always shave with a sharp razor in the direction that your hair grows. Follow shaving with a warm water rinse.
- Use hydrocortisone sparingly. Overuse of hydrocortisone creams can cause thinning of the skin. Do not shave over your bikini area if razor bumps are present. If your severe razor bumps do not show signs of improvement within several days or if you notice swelling, redness or other signs of infection, consult your physician at once.
