Dozens of conditions can cause spasms, irritation and inflammation of the lungs. If you experience persistent coughing or respiratory discomfort, it is important to consult a qualified health care provider to determine the underlying cause. Several respiratory diseases, including bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and pneumonia respond well to treatment with herbal remedies. Consult your health care provider before using any herbal capsule to improve the health of your respiratory system.

Eucalyptus Oil

Capsules containing eucalyptus oil may help to relieve some respiratory problems, but they should be used with extreme caution. According to the National Institutes of Health, eucalyptus oil supplements may help to thin mucus and promote its expulsion, and some research supports the oil's use as a complementary treatment for asthma. The NIH states that herbalists traditionally recommend 0.05 to .2 milliliters of eucalyptus oil daily, but even these low doses may cause toxic side effects.

Lobelia

The University of Maryland Medical Center acknowledges the traditional use of lobelia as a treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. According to the UMMC, lobelia acts as an expectorant and promotes the removal of phlegm from the lungs. Native American healers traditionally used this mildly toxic herb as a treatment for bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. Although lobelia can be effective, it may also cause serious side effects if used incorrectly. Talk to your doctor before using lobelia, particularly if you have a medical condition.

Mullein

The UMMC regards mullein as a valuable expectorant. Herbalists historically used this flowering weed to reduce mucus levels in the lungs and boost immune response to infectious bacteria. Mullein may be effective for treating bronchitis, chest colds, pneumonia and asthma, but there is insufficient evidence of its overall efficacy.

Ginseng

Ginseng capsules are highly regarded for their ability to promote immunity, lung function and overall well-being. According to the UMMC, Korean ginseng may help prevent colds and other lung-damaging viral infections. Capsules containing 100 g of ginseng may be used as a daily treatment for COPD, although the UMMC states that there is insufficient evidence to prove ginseng's value as a treatment for chronic lung disease.

Echinacea

Herbal capsules containing dried echinacea flower may support the body's defenses against respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. The UMMC suggests 300 mg of echinacea three times per day to improve immune response to bronchitis. Although generally safe for short-term use, echinacea can cause side effects if used inappropriately. Consult a health care provider before taking echinacea if you are pregnant or nursing, and avoid it entirely if you take drugs that suppress the immune system.
