Blow-drying your hair gives you the ability to style your hair exactly as you want—even as it damages the hair shaft from overexposure to heat. Instead of ending up with dry, porous and frizzy hair, opt for healthy, shiny hair by allowing it to air dry after shampooing and conditioning your tresses. This means a return to the old ways of drying your hair, before hair dryers, curling irons, hot rollers and flat irons. Allow your hair’s natural beauty to shine through by using little more than a towel, your fingers and a comb to dry your hair.

Step 1

Squeeze the excess water out of your hair with your hands. Don’t pull on or twist the strands as they are the most fragile when they’re wet, according to the Genius Beauty website.

Step 2

Wrap your bath towel around your head; blot and squeeze the strands with the towel. If your hair is long, blot and squeeze from the scalp to the ends. If your hair is short, blot the roots and strands at the same time. Work around your scalp so you squeeze out as much moisture as you can.

Step 3

Remove the towel from your head. Use your fingers to lift your hair at the roots, so you allow air to get to the root area. Keep doing this, allowing your hair to dry as you gently massage your scalp, says Bella Online.

Step 4

Comb your hair gently from the ends using the wide-tooth comb after it is partially dry. Work out any tangles using your fingers and the comb, moving from the ends gradually up to the roots of your hair. After the tangles have been removed, continue to comb your hair gently so you can prevent frizz.

Step 5

Allow your hair’s natural tendency toward being straight, wavy or curly as it dries. If you want to emphasize its natural waviness or curliness, make big pin curls and secure them in place with the alligator or jaw clips, suggests Bella Online. Leave them in until your hair is completely dry. If you have bangs, work on them with the comb to soften their appearance.

Tips and Warnings

  • You need to change the hair products you use when you air-dry your hair. Find light styling gels, mousses and serums. When you massage your scalp to start the air-drying process, refrain from running your fingers to the ends of your hair.
  • If you decide to use a heat lamp, be careful not to position your hair too close to the bulb. You’ll overheat and burn your hair.

Things You'll Need
