As you use your tennis racquet, over time, the grip tape on the handle will become worn and need replacing. You may also want to try a different type of tape on your racquet to gain a better grip and more control when playing. New grip tape in a range of styles, weights and sizes is available at a reasonable price at any good sporting goods store. While you can have the store replace your grip tape for a fee, you can replace your old grip tape at home with just a few simple tools.

Step 1

Slide the grip tape collar at the top of the handle up onto the neck of the racquet or remove the finishing tape that holds the grip tape in place.

Step 2

Use the needle nose pliers to remove the staples that hold the old grip tape in place.

Step 3

Unroll grip tape from the handle.

Step 4

Peel off several inches of the tape backing on the tapered end of the new grip tape. Staple the end to the butt cap.

Step 5

Rotate the handle in one hand and apply the grip tape with the other hand in a spiral down the handle. Overlap the edge of the tape as you go. Peel away the backing to the tape, as needed.

Step 6

Continue to wrap the tape to the end of the handle. Using a pencil, mark the tape around the handle edge and trim off the excess with the scissors.

Step 7

Replace the grip tape collar or the finishing tape that holds the grip tape in place.
