Shine on the face results from excess oil on the surface of the skin. Individuals with shiny skin sometimes also suffer from acne breakouts. Controlling the amount of oil on the skin stops the shine and prevents pimples. Although there is no permanent cure for excess oil production, shiny skin is manageable by following a good skin care routine on a regular basis.

Step 1

Wash your face with hot water and mild soap to dry up excess oil that may be on the surface of the skin. Cleanse the face often if you suffer from oily skin, two times daily, according to the DermNet NZ website. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends cleansers labeled oil-free that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

Step 2

Use matte makeup products. Look for primers and foundations labeled as being matte or semi-matte. These makeup items are specifically made to prevent and reduce shine on the face. All products should be oil free and water based to stop shine on the face.

Step 3

Cover the shine with mineral powder. When you are finished applying skincare and makeup products, finish your look with a thin dusting of mineral powder over the face. The powder absorbs excess oil to reduce the shine on the face.

Step 4

Exfoliate the skin weekly. As long as you are not having an active acne breakout, exfoliating with a facial scrub once a week stops excess oil on the skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. If you have breakouts, wait until the skin clears since exfoliating can irritate the skin.

Step 5

Apply a mud mask once a week and leave in place for approximately 15 minutes before rinsing off. Mud masks draw out oils from the skin. According to the Daily Glow website, fruit and botanical ingredients added to mud masks are ideal for oily skin. Some suggestions include rosewater, apple cider vinegar and citrus.

Things You'll Need

  • Mud mask
  • Mild Soap
