Caring for piercings properly helps minimize your risk of infection and keeps the hole open. Your piercer can replace your belly button ring for you, but you can also change your jewelry yourself. Captured bead rings and curved barbells are the most common types of belly button rings. Discuss your jewelry choices with your piercer to help you choose a suitable size and material.

Step 1

Wash your hands with warm water and anti-bacterial soap. Dry your hands thoroughly.

Step 2

Rub soap and warm water over the new ring or barbell and dry it completely.

Step 3

Unscrew the removable ball on the end of barbell jewelry. Most barbells use threaded balls that you must turn to the left to unscrew, though you may have to turn it to the right depending on how you positioned it. Pop out captured beads or balls from navel rings. Some captured beads are stiff, and you may need special pliers available from your piercer to remove the ball.

Step 4

Slide the bar or ring through the hole and remove it completely.

Step 5

Position the new barbell or ring against the bottom edge of the hole and gently slide it upward until it emerges from the other side. Twist your wrist to help guide the jewelry through the piercing.

Step 6

Screw on the end of the threaded ball or pop the captive bead into place in the ring until it is secure when you pull on it gently.

Things You'll Need

  • Anti-bacterial soap
  • Towel
  • Captured bead pliers (optional)
