How to Reduce Underarm Wetness
Overview
Underarm wetness, also referred to as "perspiration," afflicts men and women. But some people are more victimized than others. Any way you look at it, it can be quite tough to deal with, especially in social situations. The medical term used to describe excessive sweating is called "hyperhidrosis." When it comes to the underarms, there are several ways to reduce the wetness.
Step 1
Use an antiperspirant. Deodorants and antiperspirants are used to keep away odor and wetness from the underarms. But they are often only partially effective. To get better results, use an antiperspirant with aluminum chloride.
Step 2
Get some exercise. One of the quintessential benefits of exercise is weight loss. Although exercise raises your body temperature causing you to sweat, it can also cause you to lose weight. This can reduce sweating when you are subjected to hotter temperatures, as you are then in better shape. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise a day. Some examples are running, biking, swimming, weight training and brisk walking.
Step 3
Control your temper. Having high anxiety and elevated stress levels can increase your body temperature and lead to underarm sweating. Do some relaxation activities that can keep you relaxed when high-pressure situations develop. Some examples are yoga, meditative breathing, tai-chi and muscle relaxation.
Step 4
Take some medication. There are several oral medications that can also help reduce underarm wetness when nothing else seems to work. Some are by prescription and include: catapres, NSAIDs, anticholinergics and tranquilizers.
Step 5
Get your glands removed. There are sweat glands under the arms that can actually be removed to help stop wetness. The surgery is called endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.
Step 6
Use some talcum powder. Apply talcum powder to your underarms in conjunction with your antiperspirant. This can help increase the absorbency of the wetness.
Tips and Warnings
- If you use an antiperspirant with aluminum chloride, be aware of skin irritation if you use too much at a time.
