Self-confidence is the ability to perceive yourself in a positive, yet realistic way, notes the University at Buffalo. Some characteristics of self-confidence include optimism, emotional maturity and pride. Self-confidence may become lacking after a series of negative life experiences, including losing a close friend or relative or when you are under tremendous amounts of stress or pressure. Rebuilding self-confidence takes some time, but is an achievable goal.

Step 1

Think about a time in your life when you felt really self-confident, content and happy, explains Roger Elliott of Uncommon Knowledge. Elliott notes that because self-confidence can have a hormonal aspect to it, taking time to focus on the good times in your life can help you regain control of your thoughts and emotions, increasing self-confidence.

Step 2

Decrease stress in your life by avoiding procrastination and by avoiding situations that you find particularly stressful. Stress often magnifies negativity and can make self-confidence worse.

Step 3

Set realistic goals that can be achieved instead of unrealistic goals. The University of Illinois explains that by setting attainable goals, you don’t set yourself up failure. If you do not meet your goal, simply acknowledge that you tried and did your best, then move on.

Step 4

Make a list of your problems, then make a list of possible solutions to those problems. The University at Buffalo points out that while some problems may take a while to solve, others may be solved right away, which will increase positivity and can help increase self-confidence.

Step 5

Talk to friends and family about your feelings for support and encouragement. If necessary, make an appointment with a counselor or therapist who can help you work through your issues and gain self-confidence again.

Step 6

Practice patience and realize that increasing self-confidence will take time. Low self-confidence did not occur overnight, so reversing the problem will not involve an immediate fix either.
