Nicotine is the substance in cigarettes that causes addiction in users. Nicotine is used in Nicoderm patches to help the user wean from the addictive effects of the substance. Nicotine in a Nicoderm patch passes through the skin and into the blood stream. As a patient quits smoking, the levels of nicotine in Nicoderm patches is decreased gradually until use is stopped altogether. These patches are available over-the-counter. Few side effects are reported with Nicoderm patches, but some may require medical intervention.

Skin Rash

The most common side effects of Nicoderm patch use is a skin rash, states MayoClinic.com. A patient may experience hives, itching, rash, redness and swelling of the skin underneath the area where the patch was applied. This occurs because a patient may be sensitive to the substances in the Nicoderm patch. In this case, the patient should make sure that he is not continuously applying the patch to the same area of the skin and he should change application areas often. Consult a doctor if the rash becomes severe.

Irregular Heartbeat

Drugs.com states that Nicoderm patches may affect the way the heart functions. Specifically, Nicoderm patches may cause a fast or irregular heartbeat. This occurs because nicotine and the other substances in the Nicoderm patch can affect the chemical signals that control heart rate. In this case, a patient should stop using Nicoderm patches and schedule an appointment with his doctor to have his heart tested and to discuss other options to quit smoking. An irregular heartbeat is a serious condition that can lead to serious complications. A patient experiencing chest pain, shortness or breath, dizziness or excessive fatigue with an irregular or fast heartbeat should seek immediate medical attention.

High Blood Pressure

The substances in Nicoderm patches may also affect a patient’s blood pressure. Drugs.com states that Nicoderm patches may cause an increase in blood pressure, although this side effect is not very common. This occurs because nicotine and other substances in Nicoderm patches affect chemical signals that control blood vessel size. Patients with a history of high blood pressure should be more diligent about monitoring blood pressure while using a Nicoderm patch. If a patient notices an increase in blood pressure, he should schedule an appointment with his doctor for the proper assessment and treatment of his blood pressure.
