It is completely normal to want to start losing your pregnancy weight after your baby is born, but you must do it in a healthy manner, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Losing weight too quickly can release harmful toxins into your bloodstream from your body fat, and those toxins can pass to your baby through your milk, explains Susan Condon, an international board-certified lactation consultant. Some women find it easier to lose weight while breastfeeding because the body burns calories to make breast milk.
Step 1
Eat a varied, nutritious diet including plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean sources of protein. Eating healthy foods helps you get the calories you need without the excess fat and empty calories that can make it difficult to lose weight.
Step 2
Consume about 1500 to 1800 calories per day depending on your height, weight, age and medical condition. You should discuss specific calorie requirements with your doctor, but 1500 to 1800 is a good rule of thumb for most nursing moms to lose weight slowly and safely, according to La Leche League International.
Step 3
Engage in moderate exercise for 30 minutes most days of the week. Taking a brisk walk with your baby in a stroller or sling provides an excellent bonding opportunity while helping you stay fit and shed the pregnancy pounds.
