How to Apply Tea Tree Oil to Prevent Acne

There are many over-the-counter topical solutions to prevent acne, and even more available from a dermatologist. These treatments are also loaded with other chemicals and toxins that are absorbed into the body. Tea tree oil is a natural acne preventative treatment that doesn't come with harsh chemicals. A study in the Medical Journal of Australia compared tea tree oil with benzoyl peroxide, a popular anti-acne treatment, and found the oil to be just as effective. The Journal of Skin Pharmacology reports that tea tree oil has anti-fungal and anti-septic properties, which make it effective in keeping acne-causing bacteria away from the skin.

Step 1

Test a patch of skin with tea tree oil at least 12 hours before applying it to your acne. To do this, add five drops of tea tree oil to 1 tsp. of water. Mix the two together in a small bowl, and apply to an area of skin that will be more sensitive, such as the face near the hairline or the inside of your forearm. You will want to pick an area that is not highly visible, just in case you have a sensitivity to tea tree oil. If no redness, rash or itching has developed, it is safe for you to use the tea tree oil on your skin.

Step 2

Cleanse your face and dry your skin, and then mix 10 drops of tea tree oil with 1 tbsp. of distilled water in a small bowl. You must dilute the tea tree oil because it can be harsh on healthy skin if used straight.

Step 3

Dip a cotton ball into the tea tree oil mixture, and then gently cover your face with it. Pay extra attention to the acne prone areas, especially if acne has already developed.

Step 4

Leave the oil on your skin and do not rinse off. This treatment can be done once daily if acne has started to develop, or three times a week to maintain clear skin.

Step 5

Spot treat an acne pustule by putting one drop of tea tree oil on a cotton swab, and then applying it directly to the acne. Since this is not diluted, do not get the tea tree oil on the skin near the acne, as it can be too harsh. Use the tea tree oil undiluted only in extreme cases, and never without performing a skin allergy test first.

Tips and Warnings

  • Along with tea tree oil treatments, maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle to reduce the risk of developing acne.
  • If at any time while using tea tree oil to prevent acne, your skin begins to develop redness, itching or inflammation, discontinue its use.
