Remedy for Yellow Toenails

A yellow discoloration of your toenails is most often an indication that you are suffering from a fungal nail infection, according to MayoClinic.com. Remedies for yellow toenails include different ways to clear up the fungus that has invaded your nails. Treatments can include foot soaks as well as topical or oral medications, but consult your doctor before beginning any type of treatment for nail fungus.

Step 1

Create a foot soak from one part vinegar--white or apple cider vinegar is fine-- and two equal parts lukewarm water. MayoClinic.com suggests that vinegar's natural anti-bacterial properties might be able to slow or prevent the further development of the fungus that is causing your yellow toenails. Soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes daily, up to three times weekly.

Step 2

Apply essential oils to your discolored toes in an effort to treat the fungus. Tea tree oil, as well as the oils rendered from lavender and oregano, have antiseptic and anti-fungal qualities, and can be a natural way to reverse your nail yellowing, as explained by HealthGuidance. Combine a couple of drops of your chosen essential oil with an equal part of vegetable oil to avoid irritating your skin, and rub on your affected toe daily with a cotton ball.

Step 3

Schedule an appointment with your doctor if home remedies are not powerful enough to eliminate the yellow hue from your toenails. Your infection may be invasive enough to warrant prescription medications that you either apply topically to your toe or take orally.
