Xenical, or Orlistat, is a medication used to facilitate weight loss. It works at the intestinal level by blocking some of the enzymes responsible for fat digestion, which hinders the absorption of about a third of the fat eaten at the meal. Xenical therefore reduces the amount of calories usable by the body and results in the elimination of the undigested fat in the feces. This medication constitutes an adjunct to weight loss; proper diet as well as physical activity are needed to yield the best results.
Low-Fat
With Xenical, eating high-fat foods or a meal high in fat can induce undesirable side effects; a low-fat diet is therefore advisable. Fat should provide less than 30 percent of the total calories. A 1,600-calorie diet should contain no more than 53 g of total fat, while a 2,000-calorie diet could comprise up to 67 g of fat. Looking at the labels and choosing foods with less than 30 percent of the calories from fat, selecting lean sources of protein, controlling portion sizes and using low-fat cooking techniques and food preparation methods all constitute good strategies to comply with a low-fat diet.
Fat-Soluble Vitamins
By blocking the absorption of part of the fat consumed, Xenical impairs the absorption of some important fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E and K. Although a daily multivitamin is routinely suggested--and should be taken at least two hours after or before taking the medication--it is also advisable to increase the intake of these fat-soluble nutrients.
Low-Calorie
Xenical is a weight-loss aid and should be used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet to be most effective. Following a low-fat diet helps lowering the calorie intake, but controlling the portion sizes of carbohydrate- and protein-rich foods is also important. Limit starchy foods like potato, rice or pasta to no more than a quarter of the plate--1/2 to 1 1/2 cup. As for meat, poultry and fish, keep it to the size of the palm of the hand--2 to 5 oz. Avoiding high-calorie snack foods, even if they are low in fat, such as candies, frozen yogurt and the enormous low-fat muffin at the coffee shop, and staying away from empty liquid calories like soft drinks, juice and alcohol, will allow you to further reduce the calories consumed.
Fiber-Rich
Including fiber-rich foods is a good way to keep hunger away. Whole grains, non-starchy vegetables, unpeeled fruits, beans and lentils are excellent sources of fiber--and eating these foods at each meal enhances satiety. These foods require more chewing which gives the body more time to register and produce satiety signals. Moreover, meals containing fiber-rich foods are digested more slowly and make dieters feel full longer.
