When you are traveling you need foods to eat that are convenient and fast. The first temptation is usually to stop by a gas station market or fast food restaurant, but these aren't your only options. By packing your own foods and seeking out the healthiest choices while on the road, you can continue to eat healthy while you are traveling.
Step 1
Eat a large, healthy meal at home before you leave so that you'll stay full as long as possible during your travels. Choose hearty oatmeal or whole-grain pastas with vegetables and chicken.
Step 2
Choose the healthiest nonperishable snacks to take along with you. Natural energy bars, whole pieces of fruit that don't smash easily such as apples and pears, and dried fruit with nuts are all ideal choices.
Step 3
Pop some popcorn and season it with a small amount of salt and cumin or curry before your trip. Put it in a zip-top bag and eat it in place of chips and snack mixes.
Step 4
Make sandwiches to take with you for a meal if you are traveling with a cooler. Include fresh vegetables and fruits for a healthy, balanced meal and enjoy it at a roadside park.
Step 5
Choose supermarkets or delis instead of fast food restaurants for meals. Many have salad bars and fresh-made wraps and sandwiches you can enjoy in the store or at a nearby rest stop.
Step 6
Order a salad or grilled sandwich if you must stop at a fast food restaurant for convenience. Consider splitting a meal to save calories.
Step 7
Select water, milk, unsweetened iced tea and 100 percent fruit juices as your beverage during travel. Sodas contain unnecessary sugar or artificial sweeteners.
Tips and Warnings
- Whether you travel by air or car will determine what kinds of snacks you can take along. If you travel by car take advantage of bringing along a cooler and filling it with fruits, cheeses and healthy drinks to enjoy throughout the trip.
- Don't overdo it on snacking, especially during long road trips. Put your snacks in small baggies to split them into proper portions. Don't skip out on enjoying cultural foods when you travel because you are strictly eating healthy. Control your portions, but enjoy some uncommon foods you might be exposed to.
