A facial massage combines lymph massage, Swedish massage and pressure point techniques. The therapist uses gentle, even strokes to manipulate superficial layers of skin, muscle and connective tissue. The Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine indicates that "massage therapy appears to have few serious risks if it is used appropriately and provided by a trained massage professional," and advises not to perform massage on wounded skin. Discuss massage therapy with your health care provider.

Step 1

Have your client lie face up on the massage table, and move to the head of the table. Place a bolster under your client's knees. Position your fingertips at the brow line and use a constant, light pressure for 5 to 30 seconds. This pressure point technique introduces your touch to your client.

Step 2

Apply massage oil to your fingertips and thumbs. Using an even, striping stroke, massage the forehead with your thumbs. Begin at the eyebrows and massage from midline outward. Continue the technique up the forehead to the hairline and back down to the eyebrows. Repeat the forehead massage using a circular motion with your fingertips.

Step 3

Re-apply massage oil to your fingertips. With your fingertips and light pressure, massage down the jaw line using a circular movement. Begin just above the ears and continue to tip of the chin. At the tip of the chin, massage the jaw line back to bottom of the ear with your thumbs using an even, striping movement. Repeat the jaw massage technique several times.

Step 4

Massage the cheeks with your fingertips using a light, flowing stroke. Begin under the eyes and massage from the midline outward along the cheek bones to the ears. Do not stretch the skin under the eye. Continue the gliding massage technique down the cheeks to the lips, always stroking from the center outward. Repeat the cheek massage several times.

Step 5

Place your fingertips at the brow line and apply a steady, gentle pressure for 5 to 30 seconds. This comforting technique completes the massage and aims to leave your client feeling relaxed and balanced. Provide a towel to your client for removing any excess massage oil.
