Long-time practitioners of the Korean martial art taekwondo understand that every training session is essentially an exercise in self-defense techniques, but they also realize that for techniques to be successful they must be practiced for years. Techniques like blocks, kicks and punches can effectively protect you in the event of an attack and are the foundation of the martial art.

Blocks

Taekwondo students learn literally dozens of blocking techniques, which are effective methods for keeping you from getting hit in the first place. These blocks are usually performed with the arms, but leg blocks are not unheard of. Proper blocking techniques use your entire body to deflect an attack and can produce incredible power in the technique. Some of the blocks used in taekwondo include the inner and outer block, the high block, the low block and circular blocking techniques. These blocks are usually practiced in each class until they become second nature for the student.

Kicks

Taekwondo is known the world over for its breathtaking high kicks, and these techniques can be effective self-defense weapons. Kicks in taekwondo are used to keep an attacker away from you, while unleashing incredible power to defend yourself. Like blocks and punches, kicks in taekwondo use your entire body to put almost superhuman power behind the technique. Some of the most effective kicking techniques used in self defense include the side kick, which can stop an attacker in his tracks; the front kick, which can be used against an oncoming opponent; and powerful circular kicks like the roundhouse. Most instructors will suggest beginning students use basic, linear kicks rather than high, circular kicks in self defense situations.

Punches

While taekwondo is known worldwide for its flashy kicks, the martial art also focuses on powerful punches. By using your entire body to throw a punch, a small martial artist can unleash incredible power in a punch. Punches should only be used in the event an attacker closes the distance on you, but can momentarily stun an opponent to give you a chance to get to safety. Like boxing, taekwondo students learn straight punches as well as techniques such as hooks and uppercuts.
