Every woman has her own distinct vaginal odor that is determined by her hygiene practices, weight and dietary habits, according to Oregon State University. Discharge is the vagina’s way of naturally cleansing itself. While it is normal for the discharge to have a slight odor, distinct changes in vaginal odor often go hand-in-hand with irritation or infections. Decreasing vaginal odor requires a combination of lifestyle changes and suggestions from your doctor if the condition does not improve.

Step 1

Wash your vaginal area daily using soap, water and a clean washcloth. Rinse thoroughly and pat your skin dry with a soft towel.

Step 2

Wear cotton underwear and loose fitting clothing. Tight clothing prevents air circulation around your vagina, encouraging bacterial overgrowth and increasing vaginal odor.

Step 3

Trim your pubic hair using an electric razor. The hair in your pubic area can trap bacteria and odors. Keeping it well groomed can reduce vaginal odor.

Step 4

Incorporate healthy foods like fruits, grains and vegetables into your daily diet. Limit your intake of coffee, dairy, meats alcohol and tobacco, which can encourage the development of foul odors.

Step 5

Change your tampon or sanitary napkin regularly during your menstrual cycle. Cleaning your vaginal area with a baby wipe in between changes can help decrease vaginal odors.

Step 6

Consult your physician if your vaginal odor continues. Foul vaginal odors can be a sign of infections, which often require treatment with a medication.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep a travel pack of baby wipes with you in your purse along with your sanitary napkins or tampons. This way you can clean your vaginal area when you are away from home.
  • Avoid the use of soaps and body washes that contain heavy perfumes. The chemicals in these products can irritate your vaginal area, causing more problems. Avoid douching. Although douching is a popular way to reduce vaginal odors, it also has the tendency to spread infection.
