What Exercises Are Required in U.S. Army Basic Training?

If you’re graduating from high school in the near future, or are simply searching for what you want to do in life, the military could be the answer. Joining the U.S. military can be a rewarding move that gives you a sense that you’re helping protect your country, all the while building benefits that can last you a lifetime. In order to successfully graduate from basic training, you will need to meet minimum physical requirements that are tested through push-ups, sit-ups and a two-mile run.

Push-ups

The push-up requirements to successfully complete basic training are graduated to take into account your age and gender, according to Military.com. Males aged 17 to 21 are required to perform 35 push-ups in a two-minute period, while those aged 22 to 26 are only required to perform 31 of the exercises in that time. Female recruits aged 17 to 21 are required to perform 13 push-ups in two minutes, while older recruits aged 22 to 25 are required to do 11 push-ups in two minutes.

Sit-ups

Like push-ups, the sit-up physical requirements to graduate from basic training are geared toward your age and gender, and are performed in a timed environment. Male recruits are required to perform 47 sit-ups in two minutes, while males aged 22 to 26 are required to perform 31 of the exercises in the same amount of time. Female recruits aged 17 to 21 are required to do 47 sit-ups in two minutes, while those aged 22 to 26 are required to perform 43 sit-ups.

Two-Mile Run

Male recruits aged 17 to 21 are required to complete the timed two-mile run in under 16 minutes and 36 seconds, while female recruits in this age group must complete the run in under 19 minutes and 42 seconds. Male recruits aged 22 to 26 are given 17 minutes and 30 seconds to complete the run, while female recruits in this age group are required to complete the run in 20 minutes and 36 seconds.
