Lavender is an essential oil made from the flowers of the Lavandula augustifolia plant. Manufacturers, such as Netherfield, suggest a number of potential health benefits including skin healing and respiratory assistant. There is no scientific proof that lavender oil improves the health. It does, however, smell pleasant and make a excellent air freshener. When properly mixed with other compounds, lavender oil can moisturize skin and hair. Most essential oils, such as Lavender, require diffusion or a carrier oil to be effective.
Step 1
Set up a diffuser device. This could be a cold-air diffuser or a hot vaporizer. Most diffusers release water molecules into the air for inhalation. A less complex approach to diffusion would be a spray bottle with several drops of the oil added to water. The amount of oil added with depend on how strong of fragrance you want, consider 10 drops to be an average. Spray the air regularly with the mixture to diffuse the oil.
Step 2
Apply lavender oil directly to skin by combining it with carrier oils. Carrier oils bond with the molecules of the essential oil to allow for transport to the skin. Most carrier oils have a vegetable base that dilutes the concentrated lavender oil. This reduces the likely hood of skin irritation. Examples of common carrier oils include olive oil, almond oil and coconut oil. Mix the two oils together and apply directly to the skin as a moisturizer.
Step 3
Add the oil to shampoo, conditioner and body lotions to enhance the fragrance and moisturizing effect. Apply the oil lightly at first and add more if needed. Too much oil may cause separation and make the host greasy.
Step 4
Mix lavender oil with other essential oils to create a balm and moisturizing agent. When added to jojoba oil and thyme oil, the compound works may elevate dry scalp. Lavender oil and peppermint or eucalyptus added to the chest could help with congestion. Experiment with different mixtures to create fragrance and effect.
