Rocky Point was first named Puerto Penasco by the Spaniards who took over the area in the 16th century, according to All-Rocky-Point.com. In the 1820s, it became known as Rocky Point because of the rocky mountain right in the center of town. According to Puerto-Penasco.com, RV traffic has continued to rise in the area of Rocky Point. Therefore, RV parks and campgrounds in the area continue to increase to meet the demands of tourists. Most of the RV parks also offer tent camping, and most of the parks recommend making reservations ahead of time because of the high demand.

Beach Camps

Numerous RV Parks are available right on the beaches in Rocky Point. Playa Bonita RV Park is one of the oldest campsites in town, according to Purerto-Penasco.com.

The campsite is located next to Playa Bonita Resort and includes 300 hookups, showers, laundry service, security, a convenience store, a restaurant and more. All of the campsites overlook the ocean.

The Reef RV Park is located on Sandy Beach and includes laundry service, security, showers, a bar and dance club, a restaurant renowned in the area for its seafood, a mini market and more. All of these sites also overlook the beachfront.

Playa de Oro RV Park is located on Matamoros Avenue and provides 300 RV spaces, a boat ramp, a restaurant, dish TV, Wi-Fi, showers and security.

All three parks allow pets and are open year-round.

Tent Camping

Tent camping on the beach is available at The Reef and Playa de Oro RV parks, but these parks are cemented and not designed specifically for the comfort of tents. However, because the beaches in Rocky Point are all considered public land, numerous beaches allow you to set up your tent right on the sand of the beaches and camp out for free or for a low cost.

These areas are mostly located along Sandy Beach, on the way to Cholla Bay, and on the Sea of Cortez, located on the outskirts of Rocky Point. To find designated areas on the beach where tent camping is allowed, look for parking lots that allow overnight parking and look for signs on the beach that state where tent camping is available.

Town Camps

Some campgrounds are located right in the heart of the town of Rocky Point, just a walking distance from the town’s shops, restaurants, beaches and nightlife.

Desert Oasis RV Park, Quality Star RV Park and Hacienda de Marcos RV Park all provide inground swimming pools, along with their standard amenities, such as showers, full RV hookups and security. REDZ RV Park is also located in town but does not include a pool.

Manana RV Park is located just outside of town on a lake, far enough away to enjoy quiet surroundings but close enough to enjoy the town’s attractions. This park includes RV dump service, utility water, bathrooms and showers, Wi-Fi, boat launches and a lake for fishing, kayaking, birdwatching and more.

All of these parks also allow tent camping.

Attractions

Rocky Point is made up of several areas that attract tourists for different reasons.

Old Town, also referred to as Old Port, resides west of Rocky Point Mountain and is known for its fish markets. Tourist hotels, shops, restaurants and Jet Ski rentals are also available in this area.
