Hair clippers provide an easy and convenient way to trim or completely shave hair both at home and in salons. Keeping hair clippers clean helps reduce buildup from oil, dirt, hair and hair products. This keeps the clippers sharp and functioning properly.

Using hair clippers on different people without cleaning them first can pass bacteria, lice or other hair problems from one person to the next, making cleaning especially important in salon environments. Hair clippers vary in style and design, but most of them come apart for easy cleaning.

Step 1

Unplug your hair clippers if they are electric or remove the batteries if they are battery operated to avoid damage or injury.

Step 2

Shake excess hair from the clippers by tapping them against a garbage can or rinse the hair from the blade. If rinsing over a sink, place a mesh cover over the drain to avoid clogs.

Step 3

Moisten a clean washcloth and wipe the blade and the guard that fits over the clippers. Wipe these parts carefully to remove any hair that remains.

Step 4

Pull the clippers apart or loosen any screws according to the manufacturer’s directions to clean inside the clippers with a damp washcloth. Some types of clippers do not come apart.

Step 5

Dry the inside and outside of the clippers with a clean washcloth to prevent moisture buildup.

Step 6

Place two drops of clipper oil on the blade for lubrication so it functions properly. You can purchase clipper oil at most beauty supply stores.

Step 7

Replace the batteries or plug the clippers back in and turn them on for a few seconds so that the blade moves and distributes the oil evenly.

Step 8

Place your clippers in a case or drawer to prevent them from getting dirty when not in use.
