Cushing's Disease Nutrition

Cushing's disease is an endocrine disorder that typically results when the etiology of Cushing's syndrome is a tumor in the pituitary gland. This gland is of major significance because during stress the pituitary gland regulates the production of the stress hormone cortisol. Chronic high levels of cortisol or allostatic load (cumulative stress) can cause significant damage to the body, including the immune system. This process occurs because the adrenal glands produce and release too much cortisol in the body. A healthy, nutritional plan is salient for individuals with Cushing's disease.

Fats and Carbohydrates

Stephen Schueler, M.D. and colleagues recommend a strategy that includes the following nutritional guide regarding fats and carbohydrates for patients with Cushing's disease: Limit your fat intake to 20 or 30 percent; restrict the day's total calories of saturated fat to less than 7 percent; restrict total calories per day from polyunsaturated fat to 10 percent; lastly, total calories per day from monounsaturated fat should be restricted to 20 percent allowance. It is recommended that patients cut out refined carbohydrates such as, white flour and white sugar from the diet. Monitor calorie intake so as not to gain excessive weight. Also, eat several small meals a day.

Protein, Calcium and Beverages

The National Library of Medicine indicates that Cushing's disease reduces proteins and calcium in the body while expanding layers of fat. Therefore, to replace protein and calcium, a recommendation involves a diet high in protein and calcium. One can also take supplements to increase calcium and Vitamin D in the body--this will reduce actual bone loss due to cortisol over activity. According to the Cushing's Help website, it is recommended to reduce the intake of caffeine, that is, drink less coffee and tea. Instead, someone would Cushing's disease should add herbal tea to the diet. This is in addition to drinking a healthy amount of water as well as juices. Finally, someone with Cushing's disease should monitor sodium intake and make an effort to cut down on salt.

Bottom Line

One with Cushing's disease should eat a well-rounded and healthy diet with the specified amount and types of fats, carbohydrates, protein and calcium. It is recommended to monitor calories as well as cholesterol intake and salt. Also, as with any healthy routine, a person should eat soy, fiber with fruits and vegetables. A final word about diet: avoid quick, fad diet claims and stick to a healthy diet with the specified caveats.
