The colon absorbs water, salts and nutrients for use by the body and eliminates waste. Over time, the colon can get backed up with fecal matter and mucoid plaque which can complicate absorption and raise the risk factors for cancer. Occasionally flushing the colon can help keep you healthy.
Step 1
Cut out the bad foods. Foods that are hard to digest and lack any quality nutrients should be eliminated. Some examples are deep fried foods, fast foods, processed foods, refined foods and foods that are high in saturated fat.
Step 2
Crank up your intake of fiber. Fiber is a nondigestible substance that can prevent constipation and promote regularity. A diet that is low in fiber can cause an impacted colon. To keep things moving, eat foods that are high in fiber such as apples, bran flakes, pears, beans, broccoli and peas. The Mayo Clinic recommends that women get 21 to 25g a day and men get 30 to 38g a day.
Step 3
Drink plenty of water. Water helps keep you hydrated, it helps flush toxins from the system and it also aids digestion. The Institute of Medicine recommends that women get 2.7 total liters of water a day and men get 3.7 liters a day.
Step 4
Use some herbal supplements. There are many herbal formulas that can help rid the colon of parasites, improve digestion, act as laxatives and keep the colon in
working order. Some examples of these are marshmallow root, uva ursi, milk thistle, dandelion, black radish and psyllium husks.
Step 5
Get some exercise. Exercise helps keep weight under control, it improves circulation, it helps with brain acuity and it also improves joint mobility. But it can also aid the muscles in the digestive process as well. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. This can be weight training, running, biking, swimming, rowing or walking.
Step 6
Get a colonic. Colonic irrigation is similar to an enema but with a lot more punch. A device called a speculum is inserted into your rectum, and warm, nutrient-rich water is flushed into your colon to break up fecal matter and plaque. This waste material then gets flushed back out of the body.
