Proper skin care and hair removal doesn’t have to be a hassle. There are several easy ways to insert non-intensive steps into your daily schedule. Healthy choices can help to delay aging and protect the body from certain medical conditions and skin ailments.
Wash Skin Daily
To maintain healthy skin, the Kid’s Health website recommends washing your face no more than two times a day. Use a gentle cleanser that is oil-free and noncomedogenic so that it won’t clog your pores. If you are acne prone, finish up with a lotion or cream that contains benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. This will help to reduce the bacteria and oil on the skin. In addition to the skin, be sure to keep hair clean. Dirty or oily hair can clog pores, resulting in irritation or acne.
Protect Skin
Excessive exposure to the sun can cause freckles, age spots, dry skin, wrinkles and worsen acne. It also increases your chances of contracting skin cancer. To protect your skin, the Mayo Clinic suggests staying indoors when the sun is the strongest-- between the hours of ten in the morning until four in the afternoon.
When outside, be sure to protect your skin with long pants, a hat and a long-sleeved shirt. Some types of clothing are specially designed to be worn in hot weather. They block ultraviolet rays while allowing you to remain cool. When clothing isn’t practical, such as when swimming, be sure to apply a generous amount of sunscreen 30 minutes prior. Make sure it is broad-spectrum, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays.
Skin Condition
The Children, Youth and Women’s Health Service website warns that some hair removal methods are not appropriate for certain skin types. Use caution if you have light-colored skin, sun-burn easily or have moles. Waxing, laser procedures, plucking and depilatories can all be extremely painful. In addition, certain medications or conditions such as diabetes can make skin more sensitive. If your skin is sunburned or already irritated, refrain from waxing or using depilatories.
Pain Tolerance
When selecting a hair removal method, it is important to consider your tolerance for pain. Shaving is one of the least painful methods, but if you are not careful, you may end up with painful nicks or a rash. Depilatories are also a relatively painless option. Just be sure to follow all package directions and refrain from using them on damaged or irritated skin. Because hair is yanked out by the root, plucking and waxing can all be considerably painful. In addition, skin may be irritated after the procedure.
