People with diabetes must choose their shoes carefully. Diabetes can affect the nerves and blood vessels in the feet, increasing the risk for injury, infection in wounds and slow healing. This also leaves diabetics at increased risk for amputation. Choosing the right shoes is an important part of diabetic foot care and plays an essential role in preventing foot complications.

Heels and Sandals

Natural materials like leather and canvas provide better ventilation and have better flexibility than synthetic materials like plastic or vinyl. Shoes with pointed toes can impair foot circulation, and high heels put added pressure on the feet, increasing the risk for injury. Choose styles that are comfortable and supportive. The heels or sandals should not pinch, rub or put pressure on any part of the foot. Flip-flop type sandals with a thong between the toes can rub, causing injury to the skin. Look for sandals that have a comfortable, supportive foot bed and adjustable straps to support both the instep and the heel of the foot.

Walking and Athletic Shoes

When buying walking or athletic shoes, try them on before making a purchase. They should feel comfortable right from the start, without causing any discomfort or irritation. Toes should have plenty of room to wiggle, so choose shoes with a wide toe-box. It's a good idea to have your feet measured when buying new shoes to ensure you're buying the right size. The sole should be supportive and thick enough to protect the feet from rough surfaces.

Therapeutic Shoes

Some people with diabetes also have high-risk conditions like neuropathy, poor circulation and foot deformity. In these cases, a physician or podiatrist may recommend special therapeutic shoes. Medicare Part B covers the cost of therapeutic shoes for diabetes when there are certain foot conditions present. Ask your doctor or diabetes educator for more information.
