Wear a karate uniform while studying the martial art. Karate uniforms are loose-fitting and comfortable, allowing unrestricted movement for performing techniques. They also provide karate students with the somewhat identical appearance required for the pseudo-military training. The proper wearing of the uniform respects the centuries-old traditions of karate. An improperly worn uniform can distract students and could cause injury while performing stances, punches and kicks.
Step 1
Wash the karate uniform before each use. Respect for your karate school requires that you maintain a presentable appearance and smell at all times. Allow the uniform to air-dry on a hanger. Ironing typically is not necessary unless you desire a pressed look for a special occasion, such as a test for a higher belt.
Step 2
Pull on the karate pants first. Most have elastic waistbands, but some require you to tie drawstrings. Use a simple shoestring knot at a length just tight enough to keep your pants up. Pulling the drawstring too tight will restrict your breathing and movement. The base of the pants should be at least 2 inches above the ground. Karate pants legs that hang lower can cause you to trip and fall.
Step 3
Tie the right lapel of the uniform top to the left side of the uniform. Fold the left lapel over the right lapel, and tie it to the right side of the uniform. The left lapel must hang over the right lapel. In Japanese culture, where karate originated, only the dead are dressed with a right lapel over the left.
Step 4
Tie the karate belt around your waist. Traditionally, this is done by placing the center of the unwrapped belt on your belly, then wrapping both ends around your body so they end in front of you. Fold the right end over the left end, and pull it upward beneath the part of the belt lying against your stomach. Fold the left end over the right, and pull it tight through the loop.
Step 5
Pull the uniform top down to remove wrinkles. Make sure it is beneath your belt, all the way around your body. Tradition mandates that you must turn around and face away from your instructor when fixing your karate uniform. Adjusting your uniform toward your master is considered disrespectful.
