Scented oils offer a number of benefits including: calming behavior, pain relief, relieving stress and anxiety, and relieving depression. The type of scented oil that you use should be determined by your physical needs; the best oils can offer many benefits at once. However, essential or scented oils should only be used under the supervision of a physician because they can have serious side effects when used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or may interact with medications.

Lavender

Lavender is one of the most commonly used scented oils. It can be found in everything from bath oils to pillows. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, lavender is very helpful with treating insomnia. UMMC also reports that lavender can also help improve depression, reduce anxiety and help with controlling pain. In fact, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports that patients receiving minor surgery have reported improved pain control when using lavender in the oxygen. Lavender can also be used to treat your minor aches and pains, such as headaches, in your own home.

Eucalyptus

According to Macalester College, eucalyptus oil has a very invigorating smell and helps to promote your mental alertness. In addition, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports that eucalyptus oil is an excellent treatment for arthritis. UMMC reports that the vapors from the eucalyptus can also be helpful with treating chest or nasal congestion and this can be enhanced when using the oil in a warm bath or shower. Eucalyptus is also an excellent antibacterial agent for the skin and can help to reduce skin infections.

Sandalwood

The scent of sandalwood is very earthy and, according to Macalester College, the scent leaves you feeling warm and sensual. The college also reports that sandalwood can have a euphoric effect on you and is an excellent scent to use if you are having emotional upset--it helps to bring you back to reality. According to Kathy Padecky, an aromatherapist with the International Professional School of Bodywork Massage Therapy Center, sandalwood oil can also be helpful with relieving dry skin and offers anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits for the skin. Padecky also notes that sandalwood oil blends well with other oils such as basil, clove or frankincense.
