Lacrosse has a long storied history, with North American Indian tribes inventing and mastering an early version of the sport during the1400s. As the game progressed, lacrosse players used wooden balls or balls made from animal hides. Game organizers used to burn the wood balls, then scrape off the charred coating to produce a smoother playing surface. Hair, grass and sand filled the animal hide balls to provide mass. Technology brought with it the development of the modern lacrosse ball, made from hard rubber.

Brine

Established in 1922, Brine produces athletic equipment for numerous sports, although lacrosse remains the company’s main focus. Lacrosse leagues around the world use Brine balls for their durability and performance. Brine produces balls in a wide range of colors for heightened visibility, including white, blue, orange and yellow. Brine also makes softer pink sponge balls that are perfect for practice sessions and extra grippy balls with a special textured surface that helps them stay in the lacrosse stick’s pocket. Because of its reputation for quality, Brine supplies official balls for NCAA lacrosse competition.

Voit

Another strong contender in the lacrosse market, Voit makes lacrosse balls according to NCAA-approved specifications. Whether for collegiate competitions or recreational play, Voit lacrosse balls meet all the same performance standards as the company’s more famous soccer and basketball products. Voit’s neon yellow and bright white lacrosse balls provide exceptional visibility during games and resist dents, chips and punctures. Like all lacrosse balls, Voit models measure 7 3/4 inches to 8 inches in circumference, with the ball’s weight at 5 to 5 1/4 oz. Approved lacrosse balls also pass a bounce test. When dropped on a hardwood floor, the ball should bounce 45 to 49 inches to be considered for competitive play.

Warrior

The official supplier of all Major League Lacrosse balls, Warrior made its debut in 1992, quickly earning a reputation for its innovative ideas. Aside from its trademark neon orange grip ball used in MLL matches, Warrior produces balls in various other colors and styles, from a brown no-bounce ball ideal for indoor lacrosse to specially weighted balls used during practice sessions to strengthen arms and wrists. Warrior also produces a unique “super screw” ball with a carved shape that makes it curve through the air and dance along the ground for the ultimate test of hand-eye coordination.
