At 8 weeks old, an infant should be sleeping an average of 12 to 16 hours per day, according to the Babycenter website. At about 6 to 8 weeks of age, an infant typically sleeps for shorter stretches during the day and longer periods at night. If your baby is not getting enough rest during the day, it may affect her sleep patterns at night. Skipping daytime naps may make the baby overtired and find it difficult to fall asleep. Speak to your pediatrician if you need help with your 8-week-old napping during the day.

Step 1

Keep things mellow during the day. If the baby experiences sensory overload--for example, running errands with you all day, a loud television turned on constantly or multiple visitors--he may have difficulty napping during the day. The Dr. Sears website suggests using a baby sling and carrying him often for better sleep habits.

Step 2

Pick a time of day to nap. The Dr. Sears website recommends picking two times of the day when you are most tired and lying down with your baby then. This helps the baby develop regular times during the day to nap.

Step 3

Feed and change the baby on a regular schedule. An 8-week-old baby with an empty belly and full diaper is not likely to sleep well at nap time.

Step 4

Look for sleep cues. Some examples given by Babycenter are rubbing at the eyes, pulling on the ears or getting circles around the eyes. These cues can let you know that it is time to put her down for a nap.

Step 5

Choose a place to set the baby down. Babies thrive on routine. Decide whether to put the baby down for daytime naps in a swing, car seat, bassinet or crib. Transfer the baby to the desired spot when he is just about to fall asleep.
