An MDI is a metered dose inhaler, a small, portable self-contained drug device that dispenses multiple doses of a medication. Inhaled medications are the fastest acting drugs available. If you have asthma and need an inhaler, using it correctly will make a difference in how much drug is actually delivered to the lungs. If this is the first time you are using a metered dose inhaler, ask your doctor for advice and instructions on how to use the device. If it becomes difficult to squeeze the actuator while inhaling, ask your doctor for a reservoir device called a spacer.

Step 1

Read the medication package insert before using the inhaler for the first time. It provides valuable information regarding possible side effects as well as detailed instructions on how to use the device.

Step 2

Remove the metal canister from the actuation device and hold it in your hand for 2 to 3 minutes to warm it to body temperature. Place the metal canister back into the actuation device.

Step 3

Remove the mouthpiece cover and shake the inhaler thoroughly for 5 seconds. If this is the first time you are using the inhaler, or if it has not been used for over 7 days, prime it by depressing the canister and releasing one puff into the air, pointing away from your face.

Step 4

Sit up straight or stand up. Exhale completely. Place the inhaler between your teeth; make sure the tongue is flat under the mouthpiece and does not block the opening. Seal the mouthpiece with your lips.

Step 5

Press down on the metal canister as you breathe in slowly and deeply. Remove the inhaler from your mouth. Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly. If your physician has prescribed two puffs, wait 1 minute before taking a second puff. Repeat Steps 4 and 5.

Step 6

If the inhaler is a corticosteroid, rinse your mouth out with clear water after the last puff of medication, spit out the water, do not swallow, then rinse again and spit out.

Step 7

Wipe off the mouthpiece and replace the cover. Store the inhaler in a cool dry place.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always clean the inhaler after each use. When using inhalers, take the medication around the same time each day, unless it is a rescue inhaler that should be taken as needed, not to exceed a pre-determined number of doses as determined by your physician. Keep track of the number of times the inhaler is used and the number of doses each inhaler provides. Always order a new inhaler before the current inhaler is empty.
  • As with all medications, keep out of the reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and fire as the medication canister is under pressure.
