Protein is found in many foods such as meat, fish, poultry, beans, nuts, seeds, some peas and eggs. Protein foods are measured in ounces, and the nutrition information is reported on the food label in grams. Protein is a macronutrient, and one gram of protein is equal to four calories.

Step 1

Prepare your protein source to be eaten, whether cooked or raw such as nuts and seeds. If it is raw, then weigh it on the food scale. If it is to be cooked, weigh it after it is done cooking.

Step 2

Look on the food label or in the USDA nutrient database after the protein food is weighed in ounces to see how many grams of protein are found in one ounce of that type of protein. Usually, one ounce of a protein source contains 6 to 8 grams of protein.

Step 3

Multiply the protein number in grams by the total amount of ounces after the weight in ounces and the amount of protein in one ounce is known. For example, multiply seven grams of protein per 1 ounce of meat by five ounces of total weight, which is 35 grams.

Step 4

Multiply that number by four because there are four calories per gram of protein. For example, 35 grams of protein multiplied by four calories is equal to 140 calories.
