Exercising at home with dance DVDs can be an effective way to lose weight. There are many different styles of fitness dance DVDs available: salsa, ballroom, Bollywood, hip-hop, ballet, jazz, hula and belly dancing are just a few. To stay motivated, choose a style that fits your personality and fitness needs. Check the DVD prior to purchasing to ensure it is for beginners or that it includes a beginner level.

Step 1

Some fitness and dance DVDs require exercise gear, such as a mat, dumbbells, stability ball or resistance bands. Prior to beginning your first workout, pop in the DVD and watch the introduction to determine exactly what you will need for your dance workout.

Step 2

Familiarize yourself with the moves. The first few times you do the dance DVD workout go slow and pause it often to help you learn the dance moves. Pause the DVD and practice any dance move that is hard or complicated before moving on. This will make your future workouts much less frustrating and more effective.

Step 3

Set a workout schedule. If you are working out by yourself at home, avoid skipping your workouts by setting a schedule and sticking to it. Determine what is the best time of day for your workout. Factor in space, TV and DVD availability, and the needs of others in your household. Once you set your schedule let everyone know that you are unavailable during your workout time.

Step 4

Dance between three and six times a week. To lose weight you need to do a minimum of 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three to seven days a week, according to Mayoclinic.com. Most dance and fitness DVDs have options to vary the workout by length and style, which allows you to mix it up so you don't get bored.

Step 5

Watch what you eat. Eat a healthy diet that is low in calories and saturated fats to help increase your weight loss. Check your dance DVD for nutritional tips and information.

Step 6

Stay hydrated. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout your day and during your workout. Keeping your body hydrated ensures proper body function, which can help with your overall weight-loss goals.

Tips and Warnings

  • Make sure you have enough space. Always work at your own level.
