As a byproduct of the aging process, focus and memory have a natural tendency to decline, which alter a person's ability to perform even the simplest cognitive tasks, such as reading the newspaper and remembering to pay the electric bill. Although getting old is unavoidable, you do have at least some control over your ability to focus and remember things. It can be accomplished by following some key steps that involve your lifestyle and daily routine.
Step 1
Do some crossword puzzles. The brain is very much like a muscle. If it does not get used, it can become weak. Crossword puzzles stimulate the brain.
Step 2
Lower your stress levels. Being highly stressed can cause a depletion of brain chemicals responsible for memory. To improve your focus and memory, partake in relaxation activities like yoga, tai-chi, meditative breathing and muscle relaxation.
Step 3
Avoid distractions. If you get distracted easily by irrelevant things, then remove them from your sight. For example, if you are trying to write a report for work and your cell phone is nearby, turn it off and put it out of reach. That way you will not be tempted to keep checking it for messages.
Step 4
Take some breaks during the day. On some occasions, you may become overwhelmed with too much work or with thinking about something too long. This can cause you to get burned out and make you lose focus altogether. Take scheduled breaks throughout the day, especially when you feel like you are losing focus.
Step 5
Get some exercise. Exercise offers a lot of benefits to the body such as improved circulation, stress relief and better brain acuity. All three of these benefits can lead to better focus and memory. According to Stan Colcombe, a researcher at the University of Illinois-Urbana,"cardiovascular exercise that's done over a longer period of time will tend to reduce the amount of tissue you lose as you age." Thirty minutes of walking several times a week is sufficient.
Step 6
Get some protein and fats. Protein and healthy fats help improve the health of the brain. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and they get broken down into chemicals that are used for focusing. Fats are required for neurotransmitter conduction which can improve memory. Some examples of foods that have healthy fats are salmon, herring, mackerel, nuts, seeds, olive oil and avocados.
Step 7
Avoid toxins. If you are subjected to heavy metals and environmental toxins, you are at risk of having issues with your memory and focus. Stay away from these toxins along with alcohol and illegal drugs.
