Ear aches are usually caused by middle ear infections, medically known as otitis media. The Mayo Clinic notes that ear infections usually clear up on their own after a few days. But, if there is a discharge of blood or pus, you should call your doctor. Some people turn to homeopathic medicine for relief from ear infections. Homeopathy, based on the principle of "like cures like," treats symptoms by giving a minute amount of a substance that--in larger doses--would cause the same symptoms in a healthy person. Check with your doctor before taking homeopathic remedies.

Aconite

Aconite, botanically known as Aconitum napellus, is made from a plant that grows in Europe and Central Asia. Originally used as an arrow-tip poison, aconite is extremely toxic. However, the homeopathic remedy uses an infinitesimal amount of the plant, which is then successively diluted. Homeopaths take a patient's personality traits into account when prescribing a remedy, and are more likely to prescribe aconite for earache if the patient is restless or suffering from panic attacks. Elixirs, a homeopathic website, recommends using aconite at the first sign of an earache, especially if the pain is accompanied by roaring in the ears. According to the Beneforce website, if the earache is worsened by heat, tobacco smoke, and crowds but improves with quiet, warmth, and lying down, it is even an even stronger indication for aconite. Before taking aconite, check with your physician.

Chamomilla

Chamomilla, botanically known as Matricaria recutita, is made from German chamomile, a common garden herb and medicinal plant. Homeopaths often recommend chamomilla for ear aches, particularly if there is inflammation. Beneforce notes that the remedy is especially indicated for people with low pain thresholds who react to illness with anger. If the patient seems overheated, feverish and sweaty, a homeopath is more likely to advise chamomilla. Other indications for chamomilla are earaches that are worsened by hot food and drinks, but improve with cool, fresh air. Consult your doctor before taking chamomilla.

Kalium muriaticum

Kalium muriaticum, made from potassium chloride, is a popular homeopathic remedy for earaches. Elixirs notes that it is especially useful for earaches that result from a blocked Eustachian tube. According to Beneforce, hard-working and optimistic people who are easily affected by the moods of others are good candidates for this remedy, especially if the earache is accompanied by a crackling noise. If the earache is worsened by cold air, damp weather and greasy, rich food, but improved by warmth and loose, comfortable clothes, it is an even stronger indication that kalium muriaticum may be the right remedy. Before taking kalium muriaticum, get the OK from a medical professional.

Pulsatilla nigricans

Pulsatilla, botanically known as Anemone pratensis, is made from the meadow anemone, a low-lying perennial plant sometimes referred to as pasque flower. According to Elixirs, pulsatilla is especially appropriate for treating childrens' earaches. Herbs 2000 notes that sweet-natured, gentle and compliant people benefit from pulsatilla. If symptoms are worse at night and after eating rich food, but improve with sympathetic treatment and mild exercise, a homeopath is even more likely to prescribe pulsatilla. Check with your doctor before taking pulsatilla.
