Dark eye circles appear under the eyes in tones of ashy grays to light blue. The skin is generally thinner near the eye area; when blood passes through the capillaries near the eyes it appears blue with some skin tones. The causes for the circles can be genetic or sleep deprivation as well as deficiency of vitamin K. Treatment works best when the cause of the under eye circles is determined.
Step 1
Elevate your head when sleeping. Fluid will naturally drain and rather than pool under the eyelids. Get eight hours of sleep a night. If sleep problems recur consistently, see a doctor.
Step 2
Cautiously purchase beauty products that cure circles under the eyes. If the dark circles are hereditary, most products will not produce much improvement. Look for eye creams that include vitamin K. Doctors believe the vitamin prevents bruising and works similarly under the eyes by restricting blood flow. Kojic acid and hydroquinone are two ingredients that lighten the under eye area by slightly bleaching the skin.
Step 3
Apply a concealer. Concealers are skin-toned foundations that can disguise gray circles temporarily. Ask a cosmetician at a beauty supply store for recommendations and to sample several products prior to purchasing. Concealers that contain silicone blend easily and resist creasing. Waterproof concealers are recommended during the summer months. Studio Finish Concealer, SPF 35 made by M.A.C has built in sunscreen, for additional protection.
Step 4
Cool cucumbers in the refrigerator. Slice into thin sections and place on eyes for 10 minutes each. Cold herbal tea bags also work well.
Step 5
Drink water and eliminate unnecessary salt from the diet. Dehydration is a cause for increased grey circles and bags under the eyes.
Step 6
Eat a healthy diet and take a daily vitamin. Add vitamin K to the diet by taking a daily supplement. Foods rich in vitamin K include green vegetables such as spinach, okra and broccoli.
Step 7
Use sunscreen around the eye area with an SPF of 30 or more. Reapply as necessary throughout the day. Wear eye protection when outdoors.
