Garnier Nutritioniste is a skin care line with cleansers, moisturizers and treatments. This line has many different products with many different formulas; however, there are some ingredients that show up more than others. Garnier Nutritioniste promises natural ingredients and “great skin from the inside out."

Panthenol

Panthenol is a vitamin B5 derivative that can also be called pantothenic acid. It is used as a lubricant to give a smooth and softer finish to the skin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has deemed it safe to use and the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, or CIR, has evaluated it as safe for cosmetics. It can be in hair or skin formulas. According to Cosmetics Info online, panthenol can convert to vitamin B5 in the skin.

Salicylic Acid

In many of the treatments for acne, salicylic acid works as an exfoliant, an anti-irritant, anti-dandruff treatment and anti-acne medication. It both reduces the number of acne blemish breakouts and the frequency of the breakouts. Salicylic acid is sometimes referred to as a beta-hydroxy acid, or BHA. The Cosmetic Cop website states it can improve collagen production and skin thickness.

Retinyl Palmitate

A form of vitamin A, retinyl palmitate is an ester of palmitic acid and retinol. It too has been deemed safe to use by the CIR and FDA. Retinyl Palmitate works by reducing skin flaking and improving the appearance of dry skin, according to Cosmetics Info. It can be commercially produced or found in plants and animal fat. Many formulas include retinyl palmitate to restore skin suppleness.

Glycerin

Glycerin is in animal or vegetable fats, or it can be synthetic. It is a humectant agent that pulls moisture from the air or surrounding source and puts it onto the skin’s surface, according to Cosmetics Cop. It is a skin-identical ingredient, or already found naturally in skin, and helps prevent dryness. Pure glycerin in full concentration can burn or blister the skin; however, glycerin is typically in low concentrations in products.

Parabens

Garnier Nutritioniste uses many different paraben preservatives in its products to prevent spoilage. Paraben preservatives inhibit growth of fungi, mold, bacteria and other microbes. Paraben preservatives are methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, isopropylparaben, propylparaben and isobutylparaben. They do not release formaldehyde, so are considered one of the more gentle preservatives to use, according to Cosmetics Info.
