Handlebar grips are an important cycling accessory. They help keep a rider's hands in the correct position on a bicycle, aiding control in turns and maneuvers and helping the rider reach the brakes and gears with ease. The high level of stress that bar grips are under, however, means they might need to be replaced several times throughout the lifetime of a bicycle.

Step 1

Remove the existing grips from the bars. Loosen the brakes and gear shifter using an Allen wrench and slide them toward the center of the bar to give you plenty of space. Take the bar end plugs out of the handlebar ends. Slide the flathead screwdriver under each grip, then spray lubricant down the length of the grips.

Step 2

Wiggle the grips off the end of the bars. Wipe the lubricant from the bars to prevent the grips from slipping. If you're reattaching the same grips, allow them to dry for a few minutes.

Step 3

Take the hairspray and, on one grip at a time, spray liberally into the replacement grips. Work quickly to slide the new grips onto the bars, as the hairspray will dry fairly quickly. Once the grips are fitted, the hairspray should dry and act as an adhesive that holds the grips in place.

Step 4

Replace the gear shifters and brakes in their original positions and secure them by tightening the nuts with an Allen wrench. Replace the bar end plugs.
