How to Unpinch a Lacrosse Head

Some lacrosse players "pinch" their stick heads to make handling the ball easier. To do this, you heat the head frame until pliable, then press the sides inward and cool it quickly to set the new shape. Sometimes, though, you may want to unpinch a lacrosse head. Perhaps you bought a used lacrosse stick that is pinched tighter than you prefer. Maybe you pinched the head, but don't like how the stick handles or need to adjust the head for new lacrosse rules. What was done can be undone with just a little effort, hot water and a freezer.

Step 1

Remove the netting from the lacrosse head and remove the head from the stick. Decide how far you want to unpinch the head. Measure and cut a section of the 1-inch dowel to that length.

Step 2

Select a cooking pot that will hold the entire lacrosse head and fill it with water. Bring the water on the stove to a boil and then turn off the stove.

Step 3

Place the lacrosse head into the hot water until the plastic softens enough for the sides of the head to become pliable.

Step 4

Remove the lacrosse head with a pair of tongs and hold the head with a potholder. Spread the sides of the lacrosse head and wedge the dowel between the sides to hold them in place.

Step 5

Immediately put the lacrosse head in a freezer, once the dowel is in place. Leave it there for at least four hours.

Step 6

Take the lacrosse head out of the freezer after four hours and allow the head to warm to room temperature. Carefully remove the dowel from the head. Examine the head to see if it has unpinched enough. If not, repeat this procedure with a slightly wider dowel.

Things You'll Need

  • Large cooking pot
  • Tongs
  • Pot holder
  • Dowel with 1-inch diameter
  • Saw
  • Measuring tape
