Home of the Boston Marathon, Bean-town embraces healthy living. Any time or year, vacationers, residents and day-trippers enjoy this urban playground to explore clean-living activities for the mind and body. American history has its roots in Boston and the city offers many exciting activities to absorb the historic ambiance.
Walk Down Hstoric Streets
Walking is more easily done in Boston than driving. Visitors should opt to park vehicles and walk. The Freedom Trail's walking path passes 16 historic sites, such as the Old State House, where the Declaration of Independence was first read in Boston, Faneuil Hall, Old North Church and Quincy Market.
Boston's oldest neighborhood, The North End, typifies old New England with its narrow streets and marketplaces. A walk through The North End includes sights like the Old North Church and the Paul Revere House. Visitors have been known to splurge on the authentic Italian food and pastries available in the restaurants, cafes and bakeries in this unique part of town.
View Sea Life
Located by the Boston Harbor, any time of year is a perfect time to visit the New England Aquarium. Popular aquarium inhabitants are colored fish, penguins and sea mammals. Native to the Bahamas, two of the most poisonous fish, the lionfish and stonefish, call the aquarium home. Regular visitors never miss quality time with Myrtle, the green sea turtle.
In the summer, a high-speed catamaran ride takes tourists to the whale feeding grounds, the Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary. Whales, dolphins, sea birds and other marine life populate this area. The reticent white-sided dolphins generate excitement when a viewing occurs.
Take a Bike Tour
Many bike tours are available for those who love a good bike ride. A popular tour begins in the Italian North End, bends through historic Beacon Hill and then goes to Fenway Park. The tour guide continues to lead the bicyclers through the upscale and modern Back Bay, then off the beaten path to experience Boston's diverse neighborhoods.
Baseball fans can combine a bike ride with America's favorite pastime. An evening bike tour to historic Fenway Park takes riders to where Red Sox Nation comes alive with pregame enthusiasm. Tourists can choose to ride back to the shop with the guide or park their bikes and stay for the game, absorbing the sights and sounds of the "most beloved baseball stadium in the world." The tour includes a bus ride back after the game.
Experience Haymarket Square
Haymarket is Boston's outdoor market, where fruits, vegetables, sugar cane and fresh fish are for sale. The loud and confusing atmosphere is part of the ambiance as vendors shout their wares. Buyers can purchase a lot for very little money. Bargains are to be had from one vendor until you see a better bargain two vendors up.
Sample the Local Food
Boston has a long list of healthy dining choices with many restaurants offering vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free foods. Some restaurants cater to more diverse eating preferences serving healthy foods from many different cultures. Whether a hungry visitor wants a quick bite from an outdoor food truck or prefers to dine in the comfort of a restaurant sipping on a heart-healthy glass of red wine, the city can accommodate.
