Plucking your eyebrows correctly can frame the eyes, making your face look more beautiful overall. Yet over-plucking can make the eyebrows look sparse and uneven. Men and women often over-pluck their eyebrows when they are just beginning to learn how to groom the area. Plucking essentially only requires a pair of tweezers, yet if you want to pluck your eyebrows right you will need to use a few tips and tricks.

Step 1

Purchase eyebrow stencils from a drugstore or beauty supply store. Eyebrow stencils are thin pieces of plastic with a cut-out in the shape of a correct eyebrow arch. They are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased in several different shapes and thicknesses of the brow. Eyebrow stencils can be a very helpful tool in avoiding over-plucking, yet getting a good shape to the eyebrow.

Step 2

Look in the mirror as you angle a regular pencil straight from the side of your nose up to the inner edge of your eyebrows. Mark that spot with an eyebrow pencil, and then tilt the pencil from the edge of your nose to the end of your eyebrows on the side of your face. The pencil should just graze the corner of your eye. Mark with an eyebrow pencil, the point at which the pencil touches your eyebrow. Cosmopolitan magazine explains that marking these two spots on both eyebrows prevents over-plucking by highlighting where your eyebrows should begin and end.

Step 3

Place the eyebrow stencil over your brows and color in the shape of the brow inside the stencil with an eyebrow pencil. The color does not have to match exactly to the natural color of your eyebrows; the purpose is just to make the correct shape of your brows more apparent.

Step 4

Begin plucking your eyebrows slowly and one at a time while looking closely in the mirror. Eyebrow specialist Anastasia Soare, who created a line of eyebrow care products sold in stores like Nordstroms and Sephora, recommends plucking the areas of hair which are above or below the eyebrow shape which you have colored in. Avoid plucking past either edge of the eyebrows which you marked with the eyebrow pencil, and avoid plucking any darkened part of the middle of your brows. When there are no more hairs above or below the shape that you colored in for your brows, wash off the eyebrow pencil coloring with eye makeup remover to reveal correctly plucked eyebrows. Continue plucking eyebrows every few weeks to every month as needed.
