Knowing what to expect during your massage appointment may increase your comfort level. Massage and its many types are highly accessible. Knowing what you want ahead of time is not as important as you may think. According to the American Massage Therapy Association, a qualified massage therapist can help you determine what is right for you, and may use a variety of techniques for different problems during a single session.
Setting
You can find massage therapy at a variety of places such as spas, salons, gyms, chiropractors or medical offices. The setting can range from mood enhancing with candles, soft lighting and music, to no-frills clinical. You may have a massage therapist come to your home or office, and may find them in airports or shopping malls.
Preparation
Clothing is dependent on the type of massage that you are getting, and the setting in which you are receiving it. Your comfort level is the ultimate indicator. For a full body massage, you will typically be instructed to undress to your underwear. This is so that your therapist will have full access to your limbs and upper back. You will undress, and then lie face up on the table, covering with a sheet. You should have a bolster or pillow to put under your knees to alleviate low back stress. Your therapist will knock before returning to assure that you are ready.
Session
During your session your therapist will begin at your head and neck. Arm work on one side is typically followed by leg work and then the opposite arm, back to the head. At this point your therapist will instruct you to turn away from her onto your stomach, while she holds the sheet in place. The pillow or bolster will be placed under your lower legs. The face cradle allows you to look straight down, alleviating muscle tension from a turned head. When your massage is finished, the therapist will leave, allowing you to dress.
Types and Techniques
The types and techniques of massage therapy are as varied as your desired results. Sports, medical, and relaxation are a few of the basics that are available within the massage therapy world. Some techniques used may include a sweeping, rolling or kneading of the muscles as well as direct pressure, or trigger-point, which can alleviate areas of specific tension. Other types of massage therapy may include reflexology, or energy therapies.
