How to Build a Strong Immune System

Some people are always sick, while others seem to never need a doctor. The difference between the two likely has to do with their immune system. Having a strong immune system helps you fend off colds, viruses and even terminal illnesses. You can boost your immune system by making some adjustments in your lifestyle and diet.

Step 1

Eat healthy foods. The food you eat has much to do with your health. Avoid foods that are high in fat and empty calories, such as fast foods, fried foods and refined foods. Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, nuts, seeds and beans. Fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants are good choices. These include cherries, raspberries, kale, peppers, cabbage and blueberries.

Step 2

Avoid toxins. Some recreational habits may make you feel good at first, but they can decrease your immunity by causing free radical damage. To build a strong immune system, avoid or stop smoking nicotine products and any form of illicit drugs. Keep your alcohol intake at 1 to 2 drinks a day.

Step 3

Get enough sleep. When you sleep, hormones are released that help your body repair, rebuild and recover. If you continually do not get enough sleep, your immunity can be compromised. According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults should get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.

Step 4

Get a daily dose of exercise. Exercise offers a number of benefits. It helps keep weight under control, increases mobility, improves circulation, improves brain function and boosts the immune system. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. It can be something as simple as brisk walking.

Step 5

Keep your stress levels under control. Avoid high anxiety and stressful situations by partaking in relaxation activities such as yoga, tai chi, meditative breathing and muscle relaxation.

Step 6

Have a positive attitude. If you are always complaining, always negative and always expect that things are bad and only getting worse, you run the risk of compromising your immune system. Instead, think positive, live in the present moment and do not take things too seriously.

Step 7

Keep your hands clean. Germs spread when you contact them with your hands and touch your face. Wash your hands thoroughly, especially after coming in contact with someone who is sick, or if you are handling raw meat.
