Fried, or severely damaged, hair needs special care and treatment. Hair may become dry, brittle and damaged from chemical treatments like coloring or perming, excessive styling, or environmental conditions. While a trim to remove split ends is critical, if you don't want to cut off your fried hair, you can add softness and shine with protein and moisture treatments. Gentle care routines and careful styling can also help dry, damaged and over-processed hair recover.

Step 1

Wash your hair gently, using a low pH shampoo designed for dry hair. Work the shampoo into the roots of your hair, rather than the ends, using your fingertips instead of your nails. Shampoo hair less frequently, using a light conditioner in between washings to help your hair retain natural moisture.

Step 2

Use a conditioner for damaged hair any time you wash or wet down your hair. Comb the conditioner through your hair with a wide-toothed comb before rinsing with cool water.

Step 3

Apply a deep conditioner once to twice a week after shampooing your hair. Leave the conditioner in place for three to five minutes before rinsing.

Step 4

Apply a rich homemade hair treatment once or twice a month. Use mayonnaise or olive oil, working it through dry or damp hair. Wrap your hair in plastic wrap and leave the treatment in place for 15 minutes to 30 minutes before washing the treatment out.

Step 5

Treat your hair gently while styling. Allow hair to air dry as often as possible. Style hair using old-fashioned curlers or pin curls rather than heated appliances. Apply a shine-enhancing spray to hair to smooth the cuticle and improve its overall appearance.

Tips and Warnings

  • Regular trims will help to reduce breakage and split ends even on heavily damaged hair.
  • Avoid additional chemical processing if your hair is damaged from perms, coloring or other treatments.
