Those who suffer from GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, know that eating the proper diet can help to control their symptoms. Some foods, such as those high in fat, citrus foods, mint, beverages containing caffeine, chocolate, garlic, onion and alcohol can cause symptoms to get worse. Spicy foods and tomato based foods can also cause problems for some people. Meals can contain all of the different food groups necessary for good health without containing any of these foods.

Low-Fat Meats

The meat portion of the evening meal should consist of low fat meat, such as lean beef or pork, chicken, fish or turkey. Those with GERD should remove all skin and fat and avoid cooking methods using fat.

Vegetables

When it comes to the vegetable portion of the evening meal, those with GERD will want to choose vegetables that have not been fried or cooked in a cream sauce. Tomato products should also be avoided. Other vegetables tend to be well tolerated.

Breads & Grains

All types of breads and grains are suitable for those who suffer from GERD except those made with whole milk or high fat ingredients. People with GERD can have a side of bread, pasta, or rice, as long as they don't add fatty ingredients such as butter or oil to these foods. A good way to minimize fat while still having flavor in this part of the meal is to include them in one-dish meals, such as stir fries, that are nicely seasoned.

Low-Fat Dairy

Skim milk or lowfat milk can be included as part of the evening meal, as can low-fat or fat-free yogurt. However, GERD sufferers should avoid full fat dairy products and chocolate milk, as these could aggravate GERD symptoms. Milk can be the beverage for the meal, or yogurt could be combined with fruit for dessert.

Non-Citrus Fruits

Many people with GERD have an increase in symptoms if they eat citrus fruits, so they should avoid these. Otherwise, fruits such as bananas, apples, berries, melons, pears and peaches make healthy additions to the evening meal. Fruit can make a nice sweet ending to a meal as part of a healthy desert.

Non-Caffeinated Beverages

Those with GERD can drink beverages that don't contain caffeine, alcohol, or citrus. Good options include water, 100 percent fruit juices, and herbal teas that don't contain mint. Those who are trying to lose weight to minimize their GERD symptoms should stick to water or tea as fruit juices contain a lot of calories.
