Candida is a naturally occurring yeast found in the intestines, mouth and vagina. Bacteria found in these areas keep the yeast in balance. If the immune system becomes depleted, natural intestinal flora decreases or the yeast's growth accelerates, over-growth of yeast toxins occur and cause a myriad of health issues. Symptoms can include chronic fatigue, joint pain, insomnia, allergies, depression, anxiety, vaginal or penile itching and discharge. Treatment is usually a change in diet, supplements and/or drug therapy.

Diet

The University of Maryland Medical Center states that studies have shown that lowering the intake of sugars in the diet may reduce yeast infections. Avoiding foods such as carbohydrates, processed foods, alcohol, breads, dried fruits, refined flour, vinegars, pickled vegetables, aged cheeses and mushrooms help reduce sugar, yeasts and molds in the body. Peas, potatoes, squashes, corn, beans, yams, turnips, grains and juices are to be eaten in moderation. University of Maryland Medical Center says it isn't clear whether the elimination of certain foods reduces infection or that the eating of a healthful diet makes the patient feel better.

Nystatin

Nystatin is a prescription anti-fungal medication used to treat fungal infections of the vagina, skin, intestinal tract and mouth. It comes in powder, ointment, tablet, liquid and cream. MayoClinic.com lists diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea and vomiting as serious side effects. Nystatin is not absorbed well by the blood so it is best used for topical or skin applications or for infection of the digestive tract.

Probiotics

Probiotics are taken orally and encourage the growth of wanted bacteria. Lactobacillus acidophilus is the probiotic usually suggested to restore the natural flora to the gut and minimize digestive and intestinal symptoms.

Antifungal Treatments

Over-the-counter anti-fungal creams and prescription anti-fungal oral medications are often used to treat vaginal yeast infections. Naturopathic anti-fungal supplements that can help kill yeast include garlic, oregano, ginger, echinacea, horseradish and cinnamon.

Vitamin Supplements

Naturopathic practitioners recommend vitamin supplements to help boost the immune system and reduce the growth of yeast. Those suggested are vitamins B, C, D, and E, co-enzyme 10, folic acid, ginkgo, ginseng, iron and magnesium. Other choices might include antioxidants, echinacea and flaxseed oil.
