According to TEMOS Consulting, sensitive skin, characterized by thin, fine-textured skin that tends to be dry and delicate, affects more than 40 percent of Americans. Dr. David J. Leffell of Yale School of Medicine notes that sensitive skin easily becomes dehydrated, making it more prone to wrinkles and lines. Although proper skin care can pose a challenge for people with sensitive skin, it's important to take necessary steps to keep the skin looking healthy and alive.

Step 1

Wash your face daily, using warm water. Use a washcloth and a mild soap suitable for your skin type-oily, dry or regular. Avoid hot water, which can irritate the skin, recommends Princeton University Health Services. Follow up with a moisturizer for sensitive skin.

Step 2

Soften the beard with a warm washcloth, Princeton University advises men with sensitive skin. Spread shaving cream over the beard, then shave by passing the razor over the skin only once, with the direction of hair growth. Always use a sharp razor to avoid irritating sensitive skin.

Step 3

Use cosmetics with care, recommends Dr. Bethany Bergamo, dematologist at University of Alabama. Avoid cosmetics containing more than 10 ingredients, which create more opportunities for problems. Avoid use of waterproof cosmetics, which contain irritating solvents. Keep brushes and sponges clean. Discard old cosmetics, which can become contaminated.

Step 4

Sooth skin with cosmetics containing oats, suggests Dr. Leffell. Oats, rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids, will relieve itching and sooth irritated skin. Oats are also an effective moisturizer.

Step 5

Protect your skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Dr. Bergamo recommends that people with sensitive skin use sunscreens containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which are easier on sensitive skin because they work by deflecting the sun.

Things You'll Need

  • Washcloth
  • Mild soap for your skin type
  • Moisturizer for sensitive skin
  • Shaving cream
  • Sharp razor blade
  • Cosmetics containing oats
  • Broad spectrum sunscreen with at least 15 SPF
